If I am not wrong, Gracie wrote a few entries about how friend of hers think of Sabah in a bad way. When I was back in Malaysia, some new acquaintances used to ask about how poor is the condition in Kelantan.
Now that I am in Australia, I set my expectations higher and I reckon peoples would respect every individuals from different countries. But today I am setting the expectations to a little lower just because of my real ironic colleague.
There was once he asked me if Malaysia has highway. Okay that was pretty straightforward, so I said yes. He didn’t seemed to believe what I said and he simplified the question by asking, “Those highway which cars can run 120kmph?” He asked in a way as if I don’t understand what is a highway. I replied a “Yes” for the second time. I think the “Yes” is not affirmed to him maybe, he asked again “I am talking about those highway that has no traffic lights…and your country has it?” *faint* I really doubt if I don’t understand him, but I prefer to say that he doesn’t know English.
That was not the end.
Once he asked me why doesn’t Malaysia allow dual citizenships. Honestly I don’t know why, probably government encourages nation’s loyalty, maybe? Then he started to tell me how good his country is, which gives the nation freedom and he can own dual citizenship, bla bla bla….. He thinks that Malaysian government gives no freedom and we cannot do much things on dual citizenships. Fine. I let him continued as I really do not want to waste my time with his boost.
Another time, he asked me how long doesn’t it take a car to travel from K.L to K.B. I told him it takes about 6-7 hours. Did I giving a chance to belittle my country? I don’t know. But he said that he doubt how good Malaysia’s road system can be, in a sarcastic way. Well well, go on. I didn’t want to get angry so I let him be.
Today he told me discriminations happened very frequently in Malaysia whereas in his country, discriminations doesn’t happen at all. He started to tell me how equality take place in his country. I wouldn’t hide the truth, if it happens in Malaysia, it happens. Discriminations could happen everywhere, not only Malaysia. But I really don’t like the way he look and said about Malaysia.
I then replied him, ” If there are discriminations in Malaysia, it eventually helps people to grow better. Now look at how mature we are. ” I think I am correct because things that doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I hope I am right.

I think in every country, there are the good things and there are the bad things. Some of what he said were true, can’t deny that.. but some comments were just sprung out from his ignorance. I remember reading an article long long time ago about how people from other countries thought we still live up on the trees. I bet there are still many who haven’t even heard of Malaysia!
